2026 GMAA Board Candidates
Domingo J. Alfaro
Director of Flight – MIA at American Airlines
My aviation career began in 1979 when I started taking flying lessons at Tamiami Airport in Miami, Florida. Those early days of learning to fly sparked a lifelong passion for aviation that would shape my professional path, which included roles as a ramp and gate agent, and led to my becoming an FAA Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic (A&P). In 1981, I began flying professionally for Air Miami, a commuter airline affiliated with Air Florida. I later flew for Personal Jet Charter out of Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport and continued to build my experience across a variety of operational environments. In 1984, I joined Gateway International in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where I served as Chief Pilot, Flight Training Instructor, and Check Pilot for the Westwind II and the Israeli Aircraft Industries Arava 101-B. These roles allowed me to develop early leadership and training experience while helping ensure high operational and safety standards.
In 1986, I was hired by Piedmont Airlines in Charlotte, North Carolina, as a Flight Engineer on the Boeing 727, beginning what would become a long and rewarding Part 121 airline career. Over the years, I advanced to Captain and have held type ratings on several aircraft, including the Embraer 170/190, Boeing 737, 757, and 767, as well as the Airbus A320, A330, and A340. In 2007, I joined the US Airways Embraer 190 Training Department as a Check Airman (Instructor), and in 2013, I transitioned to the Airbus Training Department in the same capacity. During this time, I was a member of the curriculum development teams for both the Embraer and Airbus programs, where I helped develop and program simulator lesson plans for training airline pilots.
I was later selected to serve as an Aircrew Program Designee (APD), a position in which the Federal Aviation Administration authorized me to evaluate pilots on behalf of the FAA through the airline. Shortly thereafter, I accepted the role of Standards Coordinator, in which I was responsible for training and evaluating instructor pilots in the Airbus Training Program at American Airlines. These roles allowed me to contribute directly to the development, standardization, and mentorship of pilots across the training organization.
In 2016, I had the privilege of operating the inaugural flight from Charlotte to Havana for American Airlines. As a Cuban-American, I found it a particularly meaningful and proud moment to represent the airline on such a historic flight.
In 2017, I accepted the position of Chief Pilot in Miami and had the honor of becoming the first Cuban-American Chief Pilot for American Airlines. It has been a privilege to serve the Miami pilot group, the company, and the community where my aviation career first began. In 2020, I accepted the position of Director of Flight, where I was responsible for supporting approximately 2,500 pilots and overseeing flight operations in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. Throughout my career, I have remained committed to safety, professionalism, mentorship, and leadership in the service of the pilots and organizations I have had the privilege of representing.
