The Greater Miami Aviation Association will present its prestigious Wright Brothers Award to Miami International Airport Director Jose Abreu during its 82nd Annual Wright Brothers Memorial Award Gala on October 24, 2009.
The award is given to an aviation individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the aviation community in South Florida. It will be presented during evening festivities at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa in the City of Doral at 7 p.m. Proceeds from the gala and the GMAA golf tournament at the Miami Springs Country Club on Friday, October 23, will benefit the GMAA-Batchelor Aviation Scholarship Fund, a fund dedicated to awarding scholarships grants to deserving college students pursuing aviation careers.
Director Abreu has headed the Miami-Dade Aviation Department for the past four years. During his tenure the square foot South Terminal has been opened; the 1.1 mile-long North Terminal is on track to be completed in 2011; airport security and customer service have been greatly enhanced and the airfield was recognized by the Federal Aviation Administration for the 12th year of zero discrepancies. In addition, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) recently selected MIA as the Commercial Airport of the Year.
Other awards to be given that evening include the Juan Trippe Award to Mr. Roberto Kriete, CEO of TACA Airlines, and the Rickenbacher Award to aviation lawyer Roland H. Moore Esq.
