FedEx announces plans for air cargo
hub in China
FedEx Express (FedEx), a
subsidiary of FedEx Corp., has announced plans to build a new Asia Pacific
hub at the Guangzhou
Baiyun International
Airport in Southern China to better
serve its global customers doing business in and with the fast-growing China and
Asia Pacific markets. The new FedEx Asia Pacific hub will commence operations
in December 2008 at which time the existing hub in
Subic Bay, Philippines,
will close. "More than two decades ago, we envisioned China as a
nexus of global supply and demand and as a result became the first express
carrier to enter the market," said Frederick W. Smith, chairman and chief
executive officer, FedEx Corporation. "Today, with the announcement of
our planned Guangzhou
hub - the largest in Asia Pacific - we further invest in our leadership
position by creating a new gateway that expands our customers' access to the
global marketplace." The Guangzhou
facility - representing a $150 million dollar capital investment by FedEx -
will have a total floor space of 82,000 square meters located on 63 hectares
(155 acres). The hub will provide employment for 1,200 people at start-up and
be capable of sorting up to 24,000 packages per hour, double the capacity of
the current facility in Subic Bay. This hub
is expected to assume and expand the current activities of the existing hub
in the Philippines,
beginning in December 2008. According to recent forecasts, transportation
within Asia remains the world's fastest
growing regional air freight market and is expected to grow each year at 8.5
percent until 2023. China will remain a key factor in that growth due in
large part to increasing traffic in semi-finished manufactured goods and
steadily rising consumption within China. Air freight from China to the U.S.
is expected to grow at an average of 9.6 percent a year over the next 20
years, while traffic to Europe is predicted
to grow almost as quickly at 9.3 percent over the same period. (Fedex release, 7/13)
Frankfurt
freight traffic increases
Frankfurt airport reported significant freight
traffic growth in June and for the first half of 2005. The airport handled
more than 155,000 metric tons of airfreight during the month, an 8.2 percent
increase over the same period last year. The growth was paced by Middle East
and Far East service. Air cargo traffic was
up 6.9 percent. However, Frankfurt reported
a 16.6 percent decline in letter and package volume compared to last June due
to the phased closing of its overnight domestic airmail hub. The increase in
freight comes after Frankfurt posted strong
growth in April and May driven by a double-digit increase in freighter
flights, which outweighed sluggish growth in belly cargo carried on passenger
flights. (Air Cargo World, 7/13)
UPS
launches express service for customers within China
UPS has announced it will offer
express package service across much of China by September. UPS is the
first global package delivery company to establish large scale, wholly owned
operations within China.
The company said it is now building on this advantage to expand into domestic
express service in the country. The new UPS operation will initially link 23
major metropolitan areas with next-day service. The contract-only service
already is available to selected customers in five major metro areas, with
the balance to be implemented by September. Approximately 80 percent of China's
international trade is generated within the territory that UPS will serve and
these same areas are expected to experience fast-growing domestic trade as
well. The company said it plans to expand its domestic China express
service in the future beyond the initial 23 major metropolitan areas. UPS
began taking control of its operations inside China under an agreement
announced last December. The deal, reached with long-time China partner
Sinotrans, opened the way for operations in the 23 business centers to be
transferred to UPS by this September. UPS said the combination of its
expanding package delivery operations and supply chain services in China has
positioned the company to become the region's premier distribution and
logistics provider. In April, UPS became the first U.S.
airline to launch non-stop service between the United
States and Guangzhou.
UPS Supply Chain Solutions, the logistics arm of UPS, has opened three new
warehouse and freight distribution centers in Shanghai,
Suzhou and
Futian and is executing plans to open another 20 facilities in major cities
over the next two years. UPS Supply Chain Solutions operates more than 40
logistics centers in China.
